How should you dress for a wedding?

A wedding is a beautiful, festive occasion when everyone wants to look their best. If you are a guest, it is important to choose an outfit that enhances the festive atmosphere. At the same time, you don't want to be so overdressed that you steal the bride's spotlight. How can you dress for a wedding as a guest to look elegant without causing any social embarrassment? We'll give you a few tips in this article.

1. Avoid white and overly bold colours.

If you can remember only one thing, remember this: white is for the bride only. So don't wear cream or ivory, either. Likewise, avoid flashy, neon or overly bold colours that will distract from the wedding's main characters. You'd probably get some bad looks – and deservedly so. On the wedding day, the bride and groom should be the centre of attention.

Instead, choose soft shades – pastel colours such as powder pink, light blue and lavender will beautifully enhance the festive atmosphere, as will sophisticated darker tones like navy, burgundy and emerald. If you prefer patterns, choose subtle, understated ones that will add style to your outfit without being too showy.

2. Don't dress too extravagantly

A wedding is a festive, but at the same time family and romantic event, so it is good to choose elegant and classy clothes, not too bold or eccentric. Avoid revealing cuts, shiny materials or bold patterns that might look inappropriate or overdone.

If the newlyweds have not set a clear dress code, remember that your outfit should fit the atmosphere of the wedding while respecting the other guests and the main players of the day. Simplicity and restraint are often the best choices to make you look stylish and still elegant.

3. Follow the dress code

Always follow the dress code in the invitation or on the wedding website. If the newlyweds have mentioned it, it means that they really care about it. Whether it's the level of formality, a particular colour or themed style, it's a wish that you should respect and arrive in appropriate attire. Not only will this show respect to the bride and groom, but it will help create exactly the atmosphere they dreamed of.

4. Comfort and adequacy

Think about spending the whole day at the wedding – from the ceremony to the evening entertainment. So choose a comfortable outfit. A tight dress that you can't sit in or a small suit that you can't move in will only make the day more uncomfortable.

And comfortable can equal beautiful, elegant and chic. Choose cuts that flatter your figure but allow you to move freely. With shoes, consider that they look good while still being able to last you all day. Men should leave their sports shoes at home and reach for loafers instead. Ladies can opt for a wider heel, elegant ballerinas or stylish sandals. And if the wedding is outdoors, be sure to match the footwear to the terrain. Needles on the lawn are not a good choice.

5. Don't forget the jewellery

The right jewellery will add an elegant and festive touch to your look. But at the same time, they shouldn't be exaggerated – jewellery should complement an outfit, not overshadow it. If you're hesitant about which piece to choose, think about your role in the wedding:

For bridesmaids

Bridesmaids tend to be aligned in a consistent style and colours, so it's ideal to stick to simple jewellery that matches the main shades of the wedding. You'll find the ideal pieces in the coloured gemstone jewellery collection, where you can choose from a range of colourful pieces from an emerald ring to aquamarine earrings

For mums

Mothers of the groom and bride can afford more refined jewellery, but still with flair. Diamonds, pearls or vintage jewellery can look beautiful and add just the right touch to the overall look.

For the witnesses

On the day of the wedding, the witnesses are very visible. During the ceremony, in photographs and during the speech. That's why they should choose dainty yet original jewellery.

For guests

As a wedding party, you should choose jewellery that will elegantly complement your outfit, but at the same time will not attract more attention than is appropriate. The rule of thumb is that less is more. A great choice is minimalist jewelry that you can wear alone or layer at your discretion.

TIP MIALIS: We make our jewellery in any colour of gold – yellow, white and rose – so you can easily match it to the colour of your dress and other accessories.

A well-chosen outfit, comfortable shoes, elegant fine jewellery are a combination that never disappoints – and that's exactly what you'll find in our Mialis atelier.
